TIPS FOR APPLYING STORYTELLING TO YOUR CORPORATE VIDEOS

Maybe you have already heard about the importance of audiovisual pieces, as people pay more attention to videos, and the shorter they are, the better. Furthermore, if they tell a story that awakens emotions, they have a better chance of causing impact and remembrance.

This was something I proved in 2019 when I worked at Think&Talk. That year, we gave a customer service workshop for a company in the automotive sector, and I was in charge of the storytelling module.

The presentation we designed had several short and entertaining videos, and most of them told a story.

For the storytelling module, one of the videos we chose was “homecoming” by Edeka, the largest retail network in Germany.

The tv ad is a great example of what good storytelling is. I invite you to watch it.

After being broadcast, it became viral, having more than a hundred million views on social networks.

Find a common ground with your audience.

Alex Feil, its director, thinks the reason the ad was successful is that it touches a truth that has to do with parents as well as their children: Adult people feel guilt, as well as sorry for their parents living their third age, and at the same time that they think about their future.

Feil received numerous E-mail, detailing people’s reactions, like that of a man who told him that he was ashamed to confess to his children that he had cried when he saw it, or  Other that spent several thousand euros on a plane ticket from Europe to Chile, to visit his parents on Christmas.

Look for a balance

For Feil, finding a balance was one of the most important aspects when doing the ad because he didn’t want to produce a deep sadness in the audience, but yet he wanted to trigger an emotional response from the viewer. “It cannot be too cheesy, but it has to press some emotional button,” he said.

Try to stablish symbols

The tv ad becomes more powerful, as the audience will relate the brand with a familiar and meeting place, a space that will receive them when they want to celebrate a family date.

The hero is your audience.

If you notice, the brand of the supermarket only appears till the end, and the ad centers in telling a story.

Each time we presented the video to a new group of participants, and when it ended, I always heard several sighs. When I turned around to face them, some of them put their hands to their eyes to wipe away their tears
